Position Summary:
The Machine Technician is a hands-on professional who is responsible for coordinating efforts with Millwrights and others to meet the technical demands of installing, de-installing, aligning, and preparing complex or sensitive machinery – including CNC equipment – for transport and/or recommissioning.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Safely install, de-install, and relocate CNC and industrial equipment for a variety of clients (aerospace, medical, manufacturing, and defense industries) according to customer specifications and company protocols.
- Conduct full machine diagnostics and condition reports prior to decommissioning. Document any operational issues or special handling requirements.
- Disassemble complex machines, with attention to machine sequencing, component labeling, and protection of sensitive elements (ball screws, spindles, wiring looms, etc.).
- Label and organize wiring, hydraulic lines, and hardware to ensure a smooth and error-free recommissioning process.
- Use precision tools such as laser alignment systems, optical tooling, dial indicators, machinist levels, etc. to align, level, and calibrate machinery post-move.
- Read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and fluid schematics or technical manuals for de-installation and reinstallation.
- Troubleshoot CNC and programmable logic-controlled equipment, verify control logic, test motor function, and assist with I/O checkouts during recommissioning.
- Work directly with rigging crews to plan critical lift paths, machine orientation for egress, and safe removal under tight clearances or height/width restrictions.
- Prepare machines for transport: drain fluids and ensure proper storage or disposal, moving parts are locked out, and high-precision components are protected against vibration or moisture.
- Oversee and/or assist with crating, blocking, and bracing machinery for over-the-road transport; ensure compliance with DOT safety standards for the movement of heavy or oversized equipment.
- Coordinate with electricians, millwrights, and outside vendors or contractors for complex power drops, disconnects, and reconnections.
- Assist in start-up and recommissioning procedures, including program loading, zero return, spindle warm-up, and part(s) test verification as required.
- Serve as technical liaison to customers; explain the work performed and assist in the resolution of installation or equipment function issues.
- Complete, maintain, and submit accurate and timely reports and documentation for all job activities, including condition reports, punch lists, service checklists, time sheets, and sign-offs.
- Assist with the management of inventory relating to rigging and maintenance tools or equipment. Identify service or calibration needs, as necessary.
- Assist with training and/or act as mentor to junior technicians. Follow and demonstrate company procedures, and best practices for mechanical integrity and customer service, and encourage this with others.
- Operate powered industrial equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, telehandlers, and overhead cranes, keeping compliance with site-specific standards and OSHA safety requirements.
- Demonstrate and enforce rigorous job site safety standards, including but not limited to PPE use, lockout/tagout, confined space, or lift planning.
- Work with dispatch and project managers to provide real-time updates; manage change when field conditions differ from planned job scope.
- Provide feedback on customer sites to help the sales team develop accurate quotes, timelines, and recurring service opportunities.
- Travel to various jobs and perform work from customer sites; coordinate work with clients and/or contractors of varying skill, understanding, or level of authority.
Minimum Qualifications (Experience, Skills, and Education):
- Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, Mechatronics, Precision Machining, or related field required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Technical certification or Vocational Trade School diploma for CNC repair / operations, Industrial or heavy machinery mechanics, Millwright technology, automation, or electrical/mechanical certification highly preferred.
- Forklift or crane operation certification helpful.
- Strong understanding of basic CNC programming and diagnostics.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic schematics. Technical writing knowledge helpful.
- Experience or background in machine tool installation, millwright work, or rigging necessary.
- OSHA 10/30 or other safety certification a plus.
- Skilled in the use of hand and powered tools used to align, level, or set heavy machinery.
- Valid driver’s license or ability to attain quickly. Willing and able to travel locally or regionally to various jobs or work sites; able to meet customer site requirements for job site access.
- Must be flexible and adaptable to highly dynamic job schedules and environments.
- Professional demeanor with a customer-focused mindset. Able to communicate effectively across all levels of understanding for a diverse workforce.
- Experience working in a fast-paced, safety-focused, machinery-moving environment. Work extended or weekend hours as required.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
This is physical, hands-on work. Must be able to perform General Physical Activities that require considerable use of arms, legs, and activities requiring moving the whole body such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, or crouching. May regularly lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds. Frequently uses senses involving sight, smell, touch, and auditory. May work off the ground at varying heights; must not be affected by flashing lights, noise, or moving machinery. May perform occasional work in a warehouse or non-temperature-controlled environment and/or outdoors over uneven terrain or with exposure to inclement weather. Travel by automobile, as necessary.
